There are many reasons to prime seed. Seed is primed to obtain faster and more uniform germination resulting in a stronger crop stand. Priming will also broaden the temperature range at which seed will germinate as well as break certain types of dormancy, such as photodormancy or thermodormancy. An example of this is INCOTEC®’s ThermocureTM treatment which was especially developed to break thermodormancy in lettuce seed and allow it to germinate at much higher temperatures.
Priming can be combined with other technologies such as upgrading, pelleting, encrusting and film coating to maximize the performance potential of the seed.
