Welcome to Incotec's newsletter
This is the first newsletter from Incotec to inform you of the latest developments around microplastics in the seed industry. We will keep you informed of any updates in regulations and the development of microplastic-free solutions. In this first edition we look at global regulation, biodegradability, and the cost of alternatives.

The microplastics issue
The microplastics issue is a challenge facing the entire seed industry. That is why we at Incotec feel strongly that it’s only by working together across the sector that we will find the right solutions to benefit our industry and our planet. If you would like to know more reach out to us.

The regulations are first to be effective in Europe. What is your expectation for similar regulations in the USA or in other parts of the world?
There is currently nothing really known regarding regulations outside Europe. Nevertheless, in California (US) a proposed legislation would commit to 75% reduction in plastic waste by 2030, and phase out most single-use packaging, which is the beginning of a broader campaign. What are the requirements for the rate of degradation in soil for microplastic free alternatives?
All biodegradability test methods have their minimum requirements for being derogated. For example, ISO 17556:2019, material needs to reach ultimate degradation of 90% relative to the degradation of the reference material (cellulose) within 24 months, may be extended by the application period in soil, but not to exceed 48 months in total. Mind you, the final PASS/FAIL criteria for microplastics are still under discussion and will be published in the final restriction.
Do you anticipate that formulation alternatives will impact final product costs?
We understand the price sensitivity. In developing alternatives, cost is an important factor next to product performance, use rate and compatibility. We are testing different solutions, also ones that are cost competitive.
