Local students discover technical careers for women
16 students from a local secondary school visited Incotec in Enkhuizen today. They saw with their own eyes what is involved in improving seeds and what roles there are for women in production, engineering, management and research.
During Girls' Day, tech and IT companies throughout the Netherlands open their doors to introduce girls aged 10 to 15 to technology and IT. They discover the technical world through company tours, meeting (female) professionals and hands-on activities. This year, 10,000 girls, 247 schools and 312 companies took part.
The Girls' Day experience can be key for girls to choose a technical or IT profession. These careers are still not always an obvious choice for girls. To make sure this changes, the social media campaign "fix the system, not the girls" was launched in 2024 to draw attention to the low proportion of women in technical and IT professions.
At Incotec the girls were offered a hands-on experience: from film coating sunflower seeds in all sorts of colours, to examining fungi from the ditch. “I can see myself working as researcher at this company”, was a closing remark from one of the girls.
